Regeneration and Eternal Life

The New Life: Indissoluble and Inseverable
Just as a man and a woman came together to produce a new person, a third person separate and distinct from the first two, so God "regenerates" a person. The seed or "sperma" of the Holy Spirit comes together with a lost sinner to produce a new person! This is why Paul is able to speak of the "old man" and the "new man" present in both of us. (Romans 6:6, Eph. 4:22-24, Col. 3:9, Rom. 7:15-20) The old man is who we are before salvation. The Holy Spirit is God. The "seed" of the Holy Spirit contains those attributes of God which He chooses to pass on to man in the regeneration. It is important to note that although man fell in Adam, he is still in the image of God. Some "genetic" component of man's spirit is joined by the "seed" of the Holy Spirit to create a new man. This new man is not "part" of God any more than a child is "part" of its parents. But as a father imparts certain genetic traits... a portion of his very essence to his child, so God passes certain "genetic" traits, part of His essence on to man in the regeneration. This is not simply a case of the person of God indwelling man. The new man, a distinct person from God, is actually a "hybrid" between God and man, coming forth from a "genetic union" which includes part of the very essence or substance of God! If this were not taught in the Bible, I would never believe it. But as incredible as this may seem, Scripture is actually teaching that the believer becomes genetically related to God through the miracle of regeneration! For this reason, Scripture declares that those who experience this miracle actually become the sons of God!
But as many as received Him, to them gave He the power to become the sons of God, to those who believe in His name.
John 1:12
This is not simply an affectionate metaphor, it is one of the most incredible truths in the universe! The new man is an offspring or "hybrid" of the old man and God Himself!! He is in reality and in truth a child of God!
Just as a child draws its genetic traits from its two parents, the same is true with those who are begotten by God. Let's look again at 1 John 3:9, translating "gennao" as "begotten" rather than "born".
Whoever has been begotten of God does not sin, for His seed ("sperma" in Greek) abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been begotten of God.
1 John 3:9
Note one of the traits which God has genetically passed on to those who are begotten of Him: They cannot sin! No sin I have ever committed has come from the new person inside me who has been begotten of God. Every sin I have ever committed has come from my old nature. (Fortunately, my sinful nature is one of the genetic traits I did not pass on to this new man! When my flesh dies, my sinful nature will die with it.)
